Rock ’n’ roll heartthrob Conrad Birdie is heading for the Army—and his teenage fans are in meltdown. Seizing the moment, struggling songwriter Albert Peterson and his sharp-witted girlfriend Rosie DeLeon hatch a publicity stunt: Conrad will debut a brand-new song on The Ed Sullivan Show and seal his farewell with a televised kiss for one lucky girl.

That girl is small-town teen Kim MacAfee, whose sudden brush with fame sends her quiet hometown of Sweet Apple, Ohio into a frenzy. As jealous boyfriend Hugo fumes, parents panic, and Albert’s meddling mother stirs up trouble, the town is turned upside down by Birdie’s arrival.
