The Field is a 1990 Irish drama film directed by Jim Sheridan and starring Richard Harris, John Hurt, Sean Bean, Brenda Fricker, and Tom Berenger. It is based on the play of the same name by John B. Keane and takes place in the 1930s in the village of Leenaun, which was predominantly filmed for the movie. The story follows Bull McCabe, a farmer who has worked tirelessly to turn a rented field into a thriving and productive piece of land for his family. However, when the owner decides to sell the field at a public auction, McCabe is faced with unexpected obstacles and turmoil, including the death of his son and the arrival of an American with plans to develop the land. As tensions rise and secrets are revealed, the fate of the field and the lives of those involved are forever changed.
