Wrongly convicted after a pioneering blood transfusion ends in tragedy, young physician Dr. John Pierre is sentenced to life imprisonment. Instead of serving time in a conventional prison, he is secretly transported to a remote asylum for the criminally insane deep in the mountains of Transylvania, where the mysterious Dr. Callistratus conducts terrifying medical experiments on unwilling inmates.

Forced to assist in sinister research into blood transfusions, John soon discovers that prisoners are disappearing under horrifying circumstances and that Callistratus is hiding a deadly secret. Believed to have been executed years earlier as a vampire, the deranged scientist has cheated death and now survives only through a constant supply of stolen blood. As John's fiancée Madeleine risks her own life to uncover the truth, the pair become trapped in a desperate battle against a brilliant but monstrous madman whose obsession with immortality knows no limits.
