A 1963 film entitled A Gathering of Eagles depicts the U.S. Air Force during the Cold War and the challenges of command. The plot is inspired by the World War II movie Twelve O`Clock High, written by producer-screenwriter Sy Bartlett, and also draws from Above and Beyond and Toward the Unknown, films written by Bartlett's collaborator, Beirne Lay Jr. Rock Hudson stars as Colonel Jim Caldwell, a Strategic Air Command (SAC) B-52 wing commander who must whip his troops into shape to pass a surprise operational readiness inspection. Newly married to an English woman, Victoria, Caldwell's transformation into a no-nonsense commanding officer causes tension with his wife. The film also features notable actors such as Rod Taylor, Mary Peach, Barry Sullivan, Kevin McCarthy, Henry Silva, Robert Lansing, Leif Erickson, and Richard Anderson. Major General 'Happy Jack' Kirby, the Inspector General of SAC, arrives unannounced at a California Air Force Base
