Deborah Bishop, Rita Phipps, and Lora Mae Hollingsway are taken aback when they receive a message from Addie Ross, claiming she has eloped with one of their husbands. In a series of flashbacks, each woman reflects on why their husband could have been the one to run away with Addie. Deborah, a farm girl, married upper-class Brad, whom she met while serving in the Navy WAVES. After the war, Deborah struggles to fit in with Brad's wealthy friends, especially when she learns that Addie was the expected match for Brad. However, Rita, a soap opera writer and wife to English teacher George, offers comfort to Deborah as she deals with her insecurity. While Rita wishes George were more ambitious, he is frustrated with Rita's obedience to her boss, Mrs. Manleigh. Despite forgetting George's birthday and inviting the Manleighs over for dinner, Rita's mistake is forgiven and George is delighted to receive a birthday gift from Addie
