Red Dust is a 1932 film, directed by Victor Fleming, starring Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, and Mary Astor. It is based on a play and adapted for the screen, and provides insight into the French colonial rubber business in present-day Vietnam. The film was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress for its cultural and historical significance. Set on a rubber plantation during monsoon season, the film follows a love triangle between plantation owner Dennis Carson, prostitute Vantine, and engineer's wife Barbara. Against a backdrop of racial tension, a tiger, and harsh weather, Dennis pursues Barbara but eventually realizes the unsuitability of their relationship. Ultimately, Dennis saves Barbara's marriage and reputation by pretending to never have loved her. The film ends on a playful note as Dennis recuperates from a gunshot wound, with Vantine reading to him and jokingly asking, "Roquefort or Gorgonzola?" before being interrupted by their servant, Hoy.
