Carl Fitzgerald (Sam Neill) is an easy-going chef whose life takes an unexpected turn when he falls for beautiful Greek-Australian barmaid Sophie (Zoe Carides). Working in a seedy Brunswick nightclub, Carl soon finds himself caught in a web of rivalries, family tensions and criminal intrigue.

When a confrontation with a drug-dealing co-worker ends in a fatal accident, Carl enlists his eccentric gravedigger friend Dave (John Clarke) to help dispose of the body. What follows is a wildly unpredictable chain of events filled with mistaken identities, bizarre cover-ups and increasingly outrageous situations as Carl desperately tries to keep his secret buried.
