Berlin, April 1945. With the Third Reich collapsing and Soviet forces closing in on the German capital, Adolf Hitler retreats to the underground Führerbunker, surrounded by his remaining military commanders, officials and closest followers.

Alec Guinness gives a commanding performance as Hitler during the final days of his life, as the increasingly desperate dictator refuses to accept the reality of Germany's inevitable defeat. Issuing impossible military orders and accusing his generals of betrayal and incompetence, Hitler continues to believe that the course of the war can somehow be reversed, even as the Red Army draws ever closer.

The story is witnessed largely through the eyes of a young officer assigned to the bunker. Initially impressed by being brought into Hitler's inner circle, he gradually becomes disillusioned as he witnesses the fear, desperation and confusion consuming those trapped inside. Around him, Hitler's senior commanders privately acknowledge that the war is lost while Joseph and Magda Goebbels, Eva Braun and other loyal followers prepare themselves for the inevitable end.

As imagined rescue operations fail and news arrives of further defections and attempted negotiations, Hitler's world finally disintegrates. He marries Eva Braun, dictates his final testament and prepares for suicide rather than face capture by the advancing Soviet forces.

Based on Gerhard Boldt's eyewitness account of life inside the Führerbunker, Hitler: The Last Ten Days is a sombre historical drama depicting the claustrophobic atmosphere, fanaticism and desperation surrounding the final collapse of Nazi Germany.
