Victorian London, 1887. Brilliant and respected physician Dr. Henry Jekyll becomes obsessed with the theory that every human being possesses two opposing personalities — one good, the other evil. Determined to prove that these forces can be separated, Jekyll develops a powerful experimental serum and makes himself the subject of his dangerous research.

The experiment succeeds with horrifying consequences.

Jekyll is transformed into Mr. Hyde, a cruel and uninhibited alter ego free from conscience and restraint. As Hyde's increasingly violent behaviour draws innocent Ivy Peterson into a nightmare of fear and brutality, Jekyll struggles desperately to maintain his respectable life and his relationship with his beloved Beatrix Emery.

But soon the transformations begin occurring without the serum, and Jekyll discovers that the monster he unleashed may no longer be under his control.

Spencer Tracy delivers a commanding dual performance alongside Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner in this lavish 1941 adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's immortal tale of the darkness hidden within the human soul.
