“A DAZZLING ADVENTURE OF DARING ROBBERY, INTERNATIONAL INTRIGUE AND HILARIOUS DOUBLE-CROSSES!”
Melina Mercouri, Peter Ustinov and Maximilian Schell star in this spectacular 1964 comedy crime thriller, packed with suspense, ingenious twists and one of the most daring jewel robberies ever attempted on screen.
When glamorous international jewel thief Elizabeth Lipp (Melina Mercouri) becomes obsessed with a priceless emerald-encrusted dagger displayed inside Istanbul's magnificent Topkapi Palace, she recruits brilliant criminal mastermind Walter Harper (Maximilian Schell) to organise an audacious robbery. Together they assemble an unlikely team of specialists, each possessing the unique skills required to penetrate one of the world's most heavily guarded treasure chambers.
Their carefully planned operation takes an unexpected turn when bumbling small-time conman Arthur Simon Simpson (Peter Ustinov) becomes entangled in the scheme. Unwittingly caught smuggling weapons across the Turkish border, Simpson finds himself recruited as an informer by the Turkish police, leaving him dangerously trapped between the authorities and the gang of international thieves.
Against the colourful backdrop of Istanbul's bustling streets, exotic bazaars and magnificent historic palaces, the criminals prepare for a breathtaking robbery involving incredible acrobatics, ingenious gadgets and a seemingly impossible security system. But with the police closing in and their carefully constructed plans threatening to collapse, can this unlikely gang pull off the perfect crime?
Brilliantly directed by Jules Dassin, Topkapi is a stylish, entertaining blend of comedy, adventure and nail-biting suspense, featuring stunning Technicolor photography and an Academy Award-winning performance by Peter Ustinov.
