In a future where powerful corporations control society, violence and individual ambition have supposedly been eliminated. The masses are kept entertained by Rollerball — a spectacular and increasingly brutal sport combining speed, motorcycles, steel and bloodshed.
Jonathan E. is the greatest Rollerball player of them all. Captain of the Houston team and adored by millions, his extraordinary success begins to trouble the corporate executives who created the game. Rollerball was designed to demonstrate the futility of individual achievement — but Jonathan has become a symbol of exactly the opposite.
Ordered to retire at the height of his career, Jonathan refuses. As the authorities desperately change the rules and make each match more dangerous, he becomes determined to discover why one individual has frightened an entire system.
