In 16th-century Spain, nobleman Pedro de Vargas (Tyrone Power) finds himself falsely accused by the ruthless agents of the Spanish Inquisition. Forced to flee his homeland, he escapes to the New World with a small band of companions, seeking freedom, fortune, and a new life.

Joining the legendary expedition of Hernán Cortés, Pedro becomes swept up in one of history's most dramatic adventures – the conquest of Mexico. Along the way he faces treachery, danger, romance, and fierce battles as he struggles to prove his innocence and forge his destiny in an unfamiliar land.
