Graham Marshall (Michael Caine) is a loyal advertising executive whose world is turned upside down when he's passed over for a promotion in favor of a younger, less capable rival. Humiliated at work and belittled at home, Graham reaches his breaking point after a chance encounter on a subway platform ends in murder.

Discovering he has a talent for getting away with the perfect crime, Graham begins systematically eliminating everyone standing between him and success. As promotions follow each carefully planned "accident," a determined police lieutenant grows increasingly suspicious—but proving Graham's guilt is another matter entirely.
