Bored with her small-town life and dead-end job as a carhop, Bobbie Jo Baker dreams of something more. Her chance arrives in the shape of Lyle Wheeler, a charismatic drifter and Wild West outlaw wannabe whose hero is Billy the Kid.

Bobbie Jo abandons her old life and hits the road with Lyle, but their carefree adventure quickly spirals out of control. Joined by Bobbie Jo's sister Pearl, her boyfriend Slick, and friend Essie, the young runaways leave a trail of robberies and violence across New Mexico.

What begins as a search for freedom and excitement becomes an increasingly dangerous crime spree, with a determined sheriff closing in and Lyle's romantic fantasy of the outlaw life becoming frighteningly real.
