After oversleeping and missing a date with the woman he has fallen in love with, Harry Washello (Anthony Edwards) answers a ringing payphone by accident. On the other end is a terrified military soldier who reveals that a full-scale nuclear attack has been launched—and that global annihilation is less than 70 minutes away.

Unsure whether the call is genuine or a cruel mistake, Harry sets out to find Julie Peters (Mare Winningham) before time runs out. As rumours spread and panic grips Los Angeles, the city descends into chaos. With riots, violence and desperation erupting around them, Harry and Julie make one final attempt to escape the coming catastrophe.
