Wake in Fright is a remarkable 1972 Australian film, directed by Ted Kotcheff and based on Kenneth Cook's novel of the same name. Set in the outback, the film tells the story of John Grant, a young schoolteacher who is forced to confront his own moral depravity after becoming stranded in an isolated and menacing town. Despite receiving praise from critics for its direction and performances, the film was a commercial failure in Australia, due in part to controversy surrounding its portrayal of outback life. However, after its original film and sound elements were restored, Wake in Fright was re-released to widespread acclaim and is now considered a pivotal piece of both the Australian New Wave and Ozploitation cycle. The film was also remade as a television miniseries in 2017
