Captains of The Clouds (1942) - Starring James Cagney - Public Domain DVD

Description: 'Captains of The Clouds' is a 1942 American war film in Technicolor, directed by Michael Curtiz and starring James Cagney. This rare, deleted UK title is now available on DVD, featuring a disc only with free shipping. The film follows the story of Canadian pilots during World War II, with a star-studded cast including Dennis Morgan, Brenda Marshall, and Alan Hale Sr. The film was notable for being the first feature-length Hollywood production filmed entirely in Canada.

The title of the film comes from a phrase used by First World War fighter ace Billy Bishop, who plays himself in the film. The story follows the rivalry between bush pilots Brian MacLean and Johnny Dutton, as they compete for business in Northern Ontario. When Dutton enlists in the Royal Canadian Air Force, MacLean joins him in a temporary partnership to help fund Dutton's dream of starting his own airline. However, when Dutton rejects MacLean's warning about his girlfriend, MacLean marries her to save Dutton from making a mistake.

As the war progresses, MacLean and the other bush pilots enlist in the Royal Canadian Air Force and are assigned to train as flight instructors. However, MacLean's brash and independent nature clashes with the military way of doing things, leading to his dismissal from the service. When a need for pilots arises, MacLean uses a fallen comrade's papers to participate and ultimately sacrifices himself to save his fellow pilots.
