COONSKIN (1975) DVD NO CASE
Description: COONSKIN (1975) (18) is a rare and deleted UK title, starring Ralph Bakshi, William A. Fraker, and Ted C. Bemiller. This adult animation film is a gritty mixture of cartoon and live action, inspired by Disney's controversial film SONG OF THE SOUTH. In this updated version, the use of racist stereotypes is intentional as convict Pappy (Scatman Crothers) tells the story of drug-dealing Brother Rabbit (Philip Michael Thomas) to his cellmate. Together, they plot and execute a prison break, facing rival gangs, crooked cops, and more in their quest for power on the streets.
The film features plenty of Bakshi's trademark violence and uses elements from the infamous Br'er Rabbit tales, including the tar baby. As a satirical take on black stereotypes and a raw depiction of urban poverty, COONSKIN remains daring and thought-provoking even today. The score by jazz legend Chico Hamilton adds to the film's unique atmosphere.
