A haunting masterpiece of Japanese horror.

Set amid the chaos of civil war in medieval Japan, Onibaba follows two women struggling to survive in a vast and isolated field of reeds. They make their living by ambushing exhausted soldiers, stealing their armour and possessions, and disposing of the bodies in a hidden pit.

Their precarious existence begins to unravel when Hachi, a neighbour returning from the war, becomes involved with the younger woman. Consumed by jealousy and fearful of being abandoned, the older woman desperately attempts to keep them apart.

Then a mysterious samurai appears wearing a terrifying Hannya demon mask. After acquiring the mask for herself, the older woman uses it to frighten her daughter-in-law—but her deception leads to horrifying and unexpected consequences.

Written and directed by Kaneto Shindō, Onibaba combines psychological horror, human desire, superstition and the brutal struggle for survival in one of Japanese cinema's most distinctive films.
