Master safecracker Ernie Mullins (Burt Reynolds) has spent decades perfecting his craft, living by his own rules on the fringes of society. When he meets Mike (Casey Siemaszko), a curious and impulsive young drifter, the seasoned pro takes him under his wing—teaching him the fine art of breaking in.

As the unlikely pair pull off a series of clever heists—from quiet suburban jobs to daring robberies set against dazzling fireworks—Mike becomes increasingly drawn to the fast life and easy money. But while Ernie values discipline and discretion, Mike’s reckless ambitions threaten to bring everything crashing down.

Complicating matters are fragile relationships, including Ernie’s ongoing arrangement with Delphine (Lorraine Toussaint) and Mike’s troubled romance, both of which highlight the personal cost of life on the wrong side of the law.

When the police begin to close in, Mike must make a choice that will define his future—and test the bond between mentor and protégé.
