When hardworking salesgirl Susan Applegate quits her job and decides to leave New York City for her hometown in Iowa, she discovers she only has enough money for a child’s half-fare train ticket. Thinking quickly, Susan disguises herself as a twelve-year-old girl named “Su-Su” to make the journey home.

Her clever plan leads to unexpected complications when she takes refuge in the train compartment of Major Philip Kirby, a kind but unsuspecting army officer who believes she really is a frightened child. When the train is delayed, Susan finds herself staying at the military academy where Philip teaches, surrounded by curious cadets and suspicious adults.

As Susan struggles to keep her secret, she becomes entangled in romantic misunderstandings, jealous rivals, and a scheme to help Philip achieve active duty. But the longer the masquerade continues, the harder it becomes to hide the truth—especially when love begins to blossom.
