Successful Los Angeles real-estate promoter Wendell “Sonny” Lawson receives devastating news: he has a terminal illness and may have less than a year to live. Horrified by the prospect of a long and painful decline, Sonny decides he would rather choose his own ending.
After an unsuccessful attempt leaves him confined to a psychiatric hospital, Sonny meets the wildly unpredictable Marlon Borunki, a fellow patient who takes Sonny's desire to die rather too seriously. When the unlikely pair escape, Marlon becomes determined to help his new friend achieve his original objective—whether Sonny still wants his help or not.
But when Sonny finally comes face-to-face with death, he suddenly discovers just how desperately he wants to live. Unfortunately, convincing the enthusiastic Marlon of his change of heart proves considerably more difficult.
Directed by and starring Burt Reynolds, The End is an outrageous black comedy mixing dark humour with a memorable supporting performance from Dom DeLuise and an extraordinary ensemble cast.
