THE PASSWORD IS COURAGE (1962) - Starring - Dirk Bogarde • Maria Perschy • Alfred Lynch - PUBLIC DOMAIN - Black & White - DVD ONLY NO CASE

The remarkable wartime story of a British prisoner who refused to let captivity break his spirit.

Based on the exploits of Sergeant-Major Charles Coward, The Password Is Courage combines wartime drama, adventure and characteristically British humour in the story of one man's determination to frustrate his captors at every opportunity.

Captured during the Second World War, Coward finds himself imprisoned in Stalag VIII-B. Escape is constantly on his mind, but simply getting away isn't enough — he encourages his fellow prisoners, ridicules the guards and devises increasingly audacious schemes to sabotage the German war effort.

During one extraordinary episode, Coward is mistaken for a wounded German serviceman and even finds himself being awarded the Iron Cross before his true identity is discovered!

Together with fellow prisoner Bill Pope, Coward becomes involved in an elaborate escape operation. Transferred to a work camp in occupied Poland, he establishes contact with Irena, a courageous member of the Polish resistance who supplies him with maps and vital information.

From destroying ammunition and supply trains to tunnelling beneath prison camps, bluffing guards and repeatedly attempting escape, Coward proves almost impossible to contain. Even when plans collapse and freedom appears tantalisingly out of reach, he refuses to surrender his determination to escape.

Starring Dirk Bogarde in one of his most entertaining wartime roles, The Password Is Courage is an exciting and frequently humorous tale of ingenuity, defiance, friendship and survival, inspired by the remarkable wartime experiences of Charles Coward.
