The radio show FATHER KNOWS BEST debuted on August 25, 1949 on NBC and was sponsored by General Foods. The show, set in the Midwest, starred Robert Young as Jim Anderson, a General Insurance agent. His wife Margaret was initially played by June Whitley and later by Jean Vander Pyl. The Anderson children, Betty, Bud, and Kathy, were portrayed by Rhoda Williams, Ted Donaldson, and Norma Jean Nilsson, respectively. The show ran on Thursday evenings on NBC until March 25, 1954. On the program, Jim's character was different from the TV version - he was more sarcastic and authoritarian, frequently insulting his children. Margaret was portrayed as a patient and sensible wife, with a few exceptions such as in a Halloween episode where she struggles to understand a floating table.
