SHE FEARED THAT LOVE WOULD TURN HER INTO A KILLER...
One of the great atmospheric horror classics of the 1940s, Cat People combines supernatural terror, psychological suspense and shadow-drenched mystery in an unforgettable production from legendary producer Val Lewton and director Jacques Tourneur.
Beautiful Serbian-born fashion illustrator Irena Dubrovna (Simone Simon) meets marine engineer Oliver Reed (Kent Smith) while sketching a black panther at New York's Central Park Zoo. Their friendship quickly develops into romance and marriage, but Irena carries a terrifying secret from her homeland.
She believes herself descended from an ancient race of Cat People – women cursed to transform into deadly panthers when overcome by passion, jealousy or anger.
Oliver dismisses the legend as superstition, but Irena's fear becomes increasingly powerful. Their marriage begins to unravel, and when Oliver grows closer to his colleague Alice Moore (Jane Randolph), Irena's jealousy awakens something dark and dangerous.
Soon Alice is being followed through deserted nighttime streets. An unseen creature prowls the shadows around a lonely swimming pool. Animals react violently whenever Irena approaches, and the boundary between psychological terror and supernatural reality becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish.
Psychiatrist Dr. Louis Judd (Tom Conway) believes he can free Irena from her obsession – but his fascination with his mysterious patient leads him dangerously close to discovering whether the legend of the Cat People is terrifyingly real.
Rather than relying upon conventional monsters, Cat People creates its horror through darkness, suggestion, sound and the fear of what might be hiding just beyond the light. Its celebrated suspense sequences helped influence generations of horror filmmakers, and the film's famous sudden-scare technique became known as the “Lewton Bus.”
A remarkable example of classic Hollywood horror, Cat People was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1993.
