France, 1915. High above the battlefields of the Western Front, the brave young pilots of Britain's Royal Flying Corps risk their lives daily against deadly German fighter aircraft. Captain Courtney (Errol Flynn) is a daring fighter pilot who frequently clashes with his commanding officer, Major Brand (Basil Rathbone), over the seemingly impossible missions that claim so many young lives. Alongside his loyal friend Lieutenant Scott (David Niven), Courtney defies orders to launch a daring attack against a heavily defended German airfield.
But when Courtney unexpectedly finds himself promoted to squadron commander, he discovers the terrible burden of leadership. Forced to send his own friends into deadly combat, he must confront the same agonising decisions he once condemned.
