When beloved priest Father Tomasino is murdered on the streets of San Francisco, traffic policeman Joe Martini (Tony Curtis) becomes determined to find his killer. Convinced that restaurant owner Sylvio Malatesta (Gilbert Roland) knows more than he admits, Joe leaves the police force and begins his own investigation.
Welcomed into Sylvio’s close-knit family, Joe finds his suspicions complicated when he falls in love with Sylvio’s cousin Anna (Marisa Pavan). As friendship and romance draw him deeper into the family, a false alibi and a long-buried secret bring Joe ever closer to the disturbing truth behind the priest’s death.
