The Bargee is a 1964 British comedy film directed by Duncan Wood and starring Harry H. Corbett, Hugh Griffith, Eric Sykes, and Ronnie Barker. Written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, the movie follows two boatmen, Hemel Pike and his cousin Ronnie, as they travel along the Grand Union Canal working for British Waterways. Despite declining traffic, Hemel remains dedicated to his traditional lifestyle and reputation as a ladies' man, much to Ronnie's envy. Along their journey, they encounter an inexperienced sailor on a pleasure craft and make various stops to visit Hemel's many girlfriends. However, when Hemel meets Christine, the daughter of a lock-keeper, he must navigate the disapproval of her father and the possibility of giving up his beloved canal life. After a series of obstacles, Hemel is forced to confront the consequences of his actions and make a difficult decision about his future on the canals.
