A detective returns from investigating strange noises and discovers the stranger's handcuffs left on the ground. While searching the roof, he encounters a mysterious woman, Ms. Ackroyd, crawling in the shadows. As the woman falls through the roof, she cries out for her father who is supposedly next door. But when the bell strikes midnight, the dead body is nowhere to be found. Three individuals arrive at the house - Brant, Nora, and Henry Doyle. After a scuffle, the thieves are locked away and Ben, one of the thieves, is revealed to have a police officer as his partner. A chase ensues but the thieves are unable to escape as the train crashes into the ferry and is dragged into the ocean. Doyle's true identity as a detective is exposed, and with the help of Nora, all the thieves except her are caught by the police. In the end, it is revealed that the real detective is Barton, and the comical twist is that Barton was impersonated
