- Norma Rae;is a 1979 American drama film starring Sally Field, who won an Academy Award for her performance. Based on a true story, the film follows the title character, a textile mill worker in a small Southern town, as she risks everything to unionize her factory and fight for better working conditions.
- A hard life in a mill town: Norma Rae Webster (Sally Field) is a working-class, single mother with little formal education who works in a low-wage, high-noise textile mill. She and her family suffer from the poor and unsafe working conditions, including her mother, who is going deaf from the noise of the machines.
- The union organizer arrives: The workers' lives are disrupted by the arrival of Reuben Warshowsky (Ron Leibman), a Jewish union organizer from New York. After hearing his passionate speech, Norma Rae is inspired to join his cause, much to the initial opposition of her family, friends, and the factory's management.
- A difficult struggle: As Norma Rae becomes Reuben's key local ally, she faces hostility from management, intimidation tactics, and threats to her livelihood. Her determination also creates tension in her personal life, especially with her new husband, Sonny (Beau Bridges).
- A defiant stand: The film's most iconic scene shows Norma Rae climbing onto her worktable and holding a cardboard sign with the word "UNION" written on it. As her co-workers turn off their machines one by one in solidarity, management has her arrested. This moment, based on a real-life event, becomes a powerful symbol of the workers' unity.
