HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940) Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell, Ralph Bellamy & Gene Lockhart - Public Domain DVD NO CASE

The faster they talk, the harder you'll laugh!

Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell are at their sparkling best in Howard Hawks' celebrated screwball comedy, famous for its lightning-fast dialogue, razor-sharp wit and irresistible chemistry.

Hard-driving newspaper editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant) discovers that his star reporter — and ex-wife — Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) intends to quit journalism, marry dependable insurance salesman Bruce Baldwin (Ralph Bellamy) and settle down to a quiet life.

Walter has absolutely no intention of letting her go.

He persuades Hildy to cover one final story: the impending execution of convicted murderer Earl Williams. When Williams unexpectedly escapes, Hildy's reporter instincts immediately return and she finds herself caught in an increasingly frantic whirlwind of political corruption, prison breaks, crooked officials, arrests and Walter's outrageous attempts to sabotage her forthcoming marriage.

Adapted from Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur's acclaimed play The Front Page, His Girl Friday remains one of Hollywood's greatest comedies — brilliantly performed, breathlessly paced and still remarkably funny more than eight decades after its release.
