Professional card sharp Marc (Alain Delon) flees to Monte Carlo after becoming the target of ruthless American gangsters. Desperate for a safe haven, he accepts an offer to become chauffeur to the mysterious and wealthy widow Barbara (Lola Albright), who lives in an isolated château with her beautiful young niece Melinda (Jane Fonda).

What begins as a chance escape soon turns into a deadly web of passion, deception and murder. Hidden behind the walls of the château are secret passages, dangerous secrets and a fugitive with a deadly plan. As loyalties shift and romance gives way to betrayal, Marc finds himself trapped in a deadly game where trust is impossible and survival is never guaranteed.
