Charley Varrick is an American neo-noir crime film from 1973, also known as The Last of the Independents and Kill Charley Varrick. Directed by Don Siegel, it stars Walter Matthau, Andrew Robinson, Joe Don Baker, and John Vernon. The film is based on the novel The Looters by John H. Reese and is one of four consecutive films in which Matthau played a non-comedic role. The story follows Charley, a crop duster and former stunt pilot who robs a bank with his wife and two others, only to have things turn violent. After escaping to a trailer park and discovering they've stolen over $750,000, Charley realizes the bank was being used to launder Mafia cash. He and his surviving accomplice, Harman, must lay low to avoid being caught by the mob. However, Harman has other plans for his share of the loot, leading to further complications.
