A perfect crime. A fortune in jewels. And one mistake that brings everything crashing down.

Recently released from prison, criminal mastermind Doc Erwin Riedenschneider has devised what he believes to be the perfect robbery — the theft of a fortune in jewels from a heavily protected city jewellery store.

To carry out the meticulously planned heist, Doc assembles a small team of specialists, including tough but troubled Dix Handley, whose dream is to escape the city and buy back the Kentucky horse farm his family once owned.

The robbery initially goes according to plan, but an unexpected accident leaves one of the gang badly wounded. Worse still, the supposedly respectable lawyer financing the operation has secretly devised his own scheme to double-cross the thieves and take the jewels for himself.

With the police closing in and mistrust spreading among the conspirators, the carefully constructed plan begins to unravel. One by one, those involved discover that escaping with the loot may prove considerably harder than stealing it.

Directed by John Huston, The Asphalt Jungle is a landmark of American film noir and one of cinema's most influential heist movies — a hard-edged tale of ambition, betrayal and doomed criminals whose dreams prove stronger than their chances of escape.
