Gaslight is a 1944 psychological thriller film directed by George Cukor, starring Charles Boyer, Ingrid Bergman, Joseph Cotten and Angela Lansbury. Based on the play Gas Light (1938) by Patrick Hamilton, it follows a young woman whose husband manipulates her into thinking she is going insane. This version, adapted by John Van Druten, Walter Reisch, and John L. Balderston, was released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to critical acclaim and received seven nominations for the 17th Academy Awards. In 2019, the film was chosen for preservation in the US National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for its cultural and historical significance. Plot In 1875, renowned opera singer Alice Alquist is murdered in her Victorian London home. Her niece Paula is then sent to Italy to continue her aunt's legacy. As an adult, Paula meets and marries her accompanist Gregory Anton after a brief courtship.
