When his troubled twin sister Savannah attempts to take her own life, South Carolina teacher and football coach Tom Wingo travels reluctantly to New York to meet her psychiatrist, Susan Lowenstein. To help Susan understand Savannah's suffering, Tom must confront the painful memories of their childhood and the secrets his family has spent years trying to forget.
As Tom gradually reveals the truth about his violent father, controlling mother and a devastating childhood trauma, he begins to recognise how deeply the past has shaped his own life. At the same time, his relationship with Susan grows increasingly intimate, forcing them both to confront difficult choices about love, marriage and family.
Directed by Barbra Streisand and adapted from Pat Conroy's acclaimed novel, The Prince of Tides is an emotional story of two damaged families and the courage required to finally face the past.
