This landmark 1965 drama examines friendship and prejudice through the relationship between an educated black man (Sidney Poitier) and a blind, illiterate white teenager (Elizabeth Hartman). Directed by Guy Green, the film boldly confronts racism during the civil rights era whilst exploring themes of human connection transcending societal divisions. Shelley Winters earned her second Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, whilst Hartman became the youngest Best Actress nominee at 22. Shot deliberately in black and white, the film features restored scenes absent from Southern theatrical releases. This public domain DVD includes director's commentary and represents a significant cultural artifact addressing race relations with nuance and emotional depth.
