"ONE EIGHT SEVEN (also known as 187) is a 1997 crime drama thriller film directed by Kevin Reynolds, starring Samuel L. Jackson in his first top-billed role. The story follows a Los Angeles teacher facing gang trouble in an urban high school, portrayed by John Heard, Kelly Rowan, and Clifton Collins Jr. Based on real-life incidents, the film's name comes from California's Penal Code Section 187, which defines murder. The screenplay was written by former high school teacher Scott Yagemann and incorporates factual data, including a 1994 survey revealing the prevalence of student attacks on teachers in schools. Follow the story of Trevor Garfield, a science teacher in Brooklyn, who faces threats from a gangster student he gave a failing grade. Despite reporting his concerns, the school administration ignores Garfield's warning and he is stabbed by the student. Fifteen months later, he moves to the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles to resume his teaching career
