Successful New York playwright Jason Kramer (Dudley Moore) is searching for a new writing partner when aspiring writer Phoebe Craddock (Mary Steenburgen) unexpectedly enters his life. Their first meeting is decidedly unconventional, but it marks the beginning of a creative partnership—and a complicated friendship—that will span many years.

Together, Jason and Phoebe experience theatrical triumphs and failures, marriages, separations and changing fortunes. Beneath their constant teasing, arguments and professional rivalry, however, lies an attraction neither is quite prepared to confront.

As the years pass and their lives take very different directions, missed opportunities and disastrous romances threaten to separate them permanently. But when circumstances finally bring the pair back together, Jason and Phoebe must decide whether the greatest collaboration of their lives was never meant for the stage at all.
