THE LAW HAS SPOKEN. NOW THE HUNT BEGINS.
In a near-future America torn apart by the Vietnam War and growing political unrest, the government invokes emergency powers allowing suspected activists, draft resisters and political dissidents to be arrested and brought before special tribunals.
Those convicted are offered a terrifying alternative to lengthy prison sentences: Punishment Park.
Dropped into the scorching Southern California desert, the prisoners are given three days to travel more than 50 miles and reach an American flag. If they succeed, they are promised their freedom. But there is a brutal catch — police officers and National Guard troops are hunting them every step of the way.
As British and West German documentary crews record the proceedings, one group faces interrogation before the tribunal while another desperately battles heat, exhaustion and their armed pursuers. What begins as a supposed test of endurance rapidly descends into violence as the prisoners discover that the rules may never have been intended to give them a genuine chance of escape.
Written and directed by Peter Watkins, Punishment Park uses a stark pseudo-documentary style to create a disturbing and provocative vision of political repression, authority and resistance. Originally released in 1971, the film has become one of Watkins' most controversial and enduring works.
