THE LOCKET (1946) is an American psychological thriller film noir directed by John Brahm, featuring Laraine Day, Brian Aherne, Robert Mitchum, and Gene Raymond. It was released by RKO Pictures and written by Sheridan Gibney, based on "What Nancy Wanted" by Norma Barzman, wife of blacklisted writer Ben Barzman. The film is lauded for its intricately woven flashbacks, providing a deeper understanding of the narrative. The story follows the arrival of Harry Blair, a well-respected psychiatrist, at a lavish wedding in Manhattan. He reveals, through a series of nested flashbacks, the truth about the bride-to-be, Nancy, and her dark past as a kleptomaniac, pathological liar, and murderer. As Nancy's fiancé is determined to go through with the wedding, Blair's own doubts about her veracity resurface. Ultimately, Nancy's troubled past catches up with her, leading to a heartbreaking and dramatic conclusion.
