Italian film director Dario Argento created Tenebrae (1982), a giallo exploring themes of dualism, sexual aberration, and metafiction. The movie reveals the senselessness of violence and Argento's inspiration from a disturbing phone call he received from a fan who accused him of negatively influencing their psyche. Shot in Rome and at Elios Studios, Tenebrae features modern and stark locations and sets with cold and austere environments, sharp angles, and modernistic spaces. Argento wanted to achieve a realistic lighting effect similar to television police shows, and his team used a driving synth-heavy soundtrack inspired by rock and disco music. Tenebrae experienced success in Italy, but faced controversy internationally and was added to the "video nasties" list in the UK.
