Not Without My Daughter is a 1987 autobiographical book by Betty Mahmoody, later adapted into a 1991 film starring Sally Field. It recounts the true story of Mahmoody's harrowing escape from Iran with her daughter, Mahtob, after her Iranian husband, Sayyed Bozorg "Moody" Mahmoody, held them captive. 
Plot summary
In 1984, Betty, her husband Moody, and their young daughter, Mahtob, traveled from their home in Michigan to Iran for what Betty was promised would be a two-week vacation to visit Moody's family. Once there, Moody informed Betty that they were staying permanently and that she and their daughter would not be allowed to return to the United States. 
The situation became increasingly abusive and tyrannical. Trapped in a country where women's rights were severely restricted, Betty and Mahtob became prisoners in their own lives. After 18 months, Betty managed to arrange a dangerous, 500-mile escape with Mahtob through the mountainous border into Turkey, assisted by empathetic Iranians.
