Four men. One impossible mission. A charge into history.
Palestine, 1917. As the First World War rages across the Middle East, the Australian Light Horse is fighting alongside British and Commonwealth forces against the Ottoman Army.
Among them are a group of young Australian soldiers whose courage, friendship and endurance are tested by the brutal realities of war. With Allied forces desperately short of water and the strategically vital town of Beersheba heavily defended, commanders are faced with an increasingly desperate situation.
On 31 October 1917, the 4th and 12th Australian Light Horse Regiments receive an extraordinary order: mount their horses and charge directly across open ground towards the Turkish trenches. What appears to be a near-suicidal assault becomes one of the most celebrated mounted charges in Australian military history.
Directed by Simon Wincer, The Lighthorsemen combines spectacular battle sequences with a powerful story of mateship, sacrifice and courage. Inspired by the true events surrounding the Battle of Beersheba, it recreates an extraordinary chapter in Australian history.
