Successful writer Charlie Bubbles (Albert Finney) has wealth, fame and a gold Rolls-Royce, but his comfortable London lifestyle has left him increasingly detached from the people and places that once mattered to him.
A reminder from his former wife Lottie (Billie Whitelaw) sends Charlie north to Manchester, accompanied by his lively young secretary Eliza (Liza Minnelli). Reunited with his young son Jack, Charlie attempts to reconnect with his family and his working-class roots, but the journey only emphasises how far removed he has become from his old life.
Funny, melancholy and distinctly British, Charlie Bubbles is an unconventional portrait of success, loneliness and alienation. It marked Albert Finney's feature-film directorial debut, from an original screenplay by acclaimed writer Shelagh Delaney.
