In the 1952 drama film PHONE CALL FROM A STRANGER, directed by Jean Negulesco, an American survivor of a plane crash reaches out to the families of three fellow passengers who tragically perished. The screenplay, written by Nunnally Johnson, is based on the novel of the same name by I. A. R. Wylie. The film utilizes flashbacks to explore the pasts of its central characters. At the 13th Venice International Film Festival, Negulesco received a Golden Lion nomination and Johnson was nominated for Best Original Screenplay. One fateful day, as attorney David Trask (Gary Merrill) is on his way to Los Angeles after leaving his unfaithful wife Jane (Helen Westcott), his flight is delayed. While waiting, he meets the troubled Dr. Robert Fortness (Michael Rennie) who is struggling with a tragic accident and plans to confess the truth.
