Synopsis

By day, she was a rich and respected lady. By night, she seduced, murdered and robbed!

Faye Dunaway stars in this lavish, provocative and action-packed period adventure, a tale of forbidden passion, dangerous secrets and murderous betrayal set against the splendour of 17th-century England.

Beautiful, ambitious and utterly ruthless, Lady Barbara Skelton (Faye Dunaway) is a woman who refuses to let anything stand between her and the life she desires. When her sister Caroline prepares to marry the wealthy Sir Ralph Skelton, Barbara shamelessly seduces the unsuspecting bridegroom and steals him for herself.

But marriage to a wealthy nobleman soon proves painfully dull for the restless Barbara. Craving excitement and adventure, she disguises herself as a masked highwaywoman and begins robbing unsuspecting travellers on lonely country roads.

Her dangerous double life takes a thrilling turn when she encounters the notorious highwayman Captain Jerry Jackson (Alan Bates). Drawn together by their appetite for danger, the pair embark upon a passionate affair and a reckless partnership in crime.

As their daring robberies become increasingly violent, jealousy, lust and betrayal threaten to expose Barbara's secret identity. With suspicion mounting and the threat of the gallows looming ever closer, the wicked lady must fight to protect her fortune, her freedom and her life.

Featuring spectacular period costumes, magnificent country estates, thrilling horseback pursuits and a distinguished British cast including John Gielgud, Denholm Elliott and Oliver Tobias, The Wicked Lady is a colourful and provocative remake of the celebrated 1945 Gainsborough classic.

Directed by Michael Winner, this extravagant historical melodrama delivers a heady mixture of romance, intrigue, scandal and high adventure.

She wanted wealth, passion and excitement — and was prepared to kill to get them!
