Wounded gunfighter Quirt Evans (John Wayne) collapses near the peaceful homestead of a Quaker family, where he is lovingly nursed back to health by the compassionate Penelope Worth (Gail Russell). As Quirt recovers, he finds himself drawn to the family's simple life and unwavering belief in peace and forgiveness—a way of life completely at odds with the violence that has defined his past.

But Quirt's notorious reputation soon catches up with him. Pursued by ruthless outlaw Laredo Stevens and tempted to return to his old ways, Quirt must choose between a life of revenge or the promise of a new future with Penny. In a gripping final confrontation, he discovers that true courage isn't always found at the end of a gun.
