Thirteen-year-old Rynn Jacobs (Jodie Foster) lives in an isolated house in a quiet seaside town. Intelligent, fiercely independent and remarkably self-sufficient, she tells curious neighbours that her poet father is away on business. But nobody ever seems to see him.
When suspicious landlady Cora Hallet (Alexis Smith) and her sinister son Frank (Martin Sheen) begin prying into Rynn's private life, uncomfortable questions arise about what really lies behind the closed doors of the mysterious house.
With only young magician Mario (Scott Jacoby) becoming someone she can trust, Rynn must use all her intelligence and determination to protect the secrets that allow her to maintain her unusual independence.
