Sean Connery stars in John Boorman's extraordinary 1974 science-fantasy epic, a visually striking journey into a bizarre post-apocalyptic future where immortality has become a curse and one outsider may hold the key to humanity's survival.
The year is 2293. Mankind has been divided into two very different societies. Outside the protected Vortex, the mortal Brutals struggle to survive in a devastated wasteland. They live in fear of the Exterminators, warriors who worship Zardoz, an enormous flying stone head that provides them with weapons and commands them to control the population.
Among the Exterminators is Zed (Sean Connery) – a powerful, intelligent and increasingly curious warrior. Determined to discover the truth behind the mysterious Zardoz, Zed secretly enters the flying stone head and is transported into the Vortex.
There he discovers the Eternals, an advanced society whose inhabitants have conquered ageing, disease and death. But eternal life has come at a terrible price. With no fear of death and seemingly nothing left to achieve, their civilisation has become stagnant, divided and increasingly incapable of finding meaning in existence.
Captured by the Eternals, Zed becomes the subject of fascination and fear, particularly for Consuella (Charlotte Rampling) and May (Sara Kestelman). As they investigate their primitive visitor, they gradually discover that Zed is far more intelligent – and far more important – than anyone imagined.
Zed, meanwhile, begins uncovering the secrets of the Vortex, the artificial intelligence known as the Tabernacle, and the astonishing truth behind the name Zardoz itself.
Soon the supposedly primitive outsider threatens everything the Eternals have created, setting in motion a confrontation that could finally bring an end to their immortality and transform the future of mankind.
Written, produced and directed by John Boorman, Zardoz is one of the most distinctive science-fiction films of the 1970s – an ambitious mixture of adventure, fantasy, philosophy and surreal imagery that remains unlike almost anything else in cinema.
